Maximo Park formed in Tyne and Wear, Newcastle in 2000 their name being adapted from 'Maximo Gomez Park', a Havana meeting place for Cuban revolutionaries. The band consists of singer Paul Smith, guitarist Duncan Lloyd, bassist Archie Tiku, keyboardist Lukas Wooller, and drummer Tom English. Their music style is heavily influenced by post-punk revival and new wave legends like The Jam, XTC, Wire and The Smiths. In 2004, funded by a friend, the band released their debut 7'' 'Graffiti' which they had recorded in their house, it caught the ears of Warp Records, which despite being a mostly electronic label signed them and released their second single, 'Apply Some Pressure" early in 2005. 2005 also saw the release of their debut album, 'A Certain Trigger' hailed by some critics as one of the best releases of the year and was nominated for a Mercury prize. Their second album, 'Our Earthly Pleasures' was released in 2007 and reached number 2 in the UK album charts, it was preceeded by the lead single, 'Our Velocity' which reached number1 in the UK Indie charts, number 9 in the UK charts.
