The Ting Tings are an English Indie pop band, consisting of two members: Jules De Martino (drums, vocals) and Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass drum); who formed in 2006 from an association from artists/musicians alternate lifestyle commune The Islington Mill in Salford, Greater Manchester. Katie White first appeared as a teenager in girl group TKO - short for Total Knock Out. Managed by her father David, who also managed Sweet Female Attitude, TKO supported acts like Atomic Kitten, Steps and Five. Jules De Martino started writing songs for TKO before the band split, and then formed trio Dear Eskiimo with White, who were signed to Mercury Records - but creative differences and the management style of the record label caused them to split. This earlier experience left White and De Martino with a distrust of the music industry, so when they formed The Tings Tings the band started out "publicising" themselves through private parties at the Mill, which ended up as some of the most sought after tickets on the Manchester party scene - with various A&R reps and record producers, including American Rick Rubin who artistes include the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash, asking for tickets.
