Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al

"You Can Call Me Al" is a song by Paul Simon, the first single released from his album Graceland. The lyrics describe a man experiencing an identity crisis which is ultimately resolved when he takes a trip to "the Third World". Paul Simon is reported to have not liked the original music video that was made. In the replacement Chevy Chase lip-synched all of Simon's vocals with gestures punctuating the lyrics. Simon wore a bored expression throughout the piece. The only time he opened his mouth was to provide the lower-pitched harmony on the phrases "If you'll be my bodyguard" and "I can call you Betty". During the fade-out instrumental, Chase and Simon performed a rhythmic dance step in synch, Chase towering over the much shorter Simon. The song features an unusual bass solo from Baghiti Khumalo where the first half of the solo was played live and the second half of the solo is just the first part but reversed (i. E. backwards). Simon allegedly wrote "You Can Call Me Al" after he went to a party with his then-wife Carrie Fisher. A man at the party kept calling Paul "Al", and Carrie "Betty", inspiring Simon to write a song.
