Director Jonathon Demme asked Springsteen to write a rock song to open his Movie Philadelphia. Bruce used lyrics he had previously written about the death of a friend but it did not work over his already famous rock beat. He sent it unfinished to Demme who loved and used it exactally how it was. The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1994, the Grammys for Song Of The Year, Best Rock Song, Best Male Vocal, and Best Song Written For a Motion Picture or Television.
