"Under the Bridge" is a single by Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on their fifth studio album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). Two decades into the California band's career, it remains their most successful single, having reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992. The music video was directed by Gus Van Sant and won an MTV Video Music Award. The title comes from the lyric, "Under the bridge downtown/Is where I drew some blood," reportedly referring to an experience in which Kiedis used drugs under a bridge with a member of a Mexican gang, although Kiedis himself refuses to reveal the exact location.
