The Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys are a American hip hop musical group from New York City consisting of Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. The current DJ for the group is Michael "Mix Master Mike" Schwartz as of their album Hello Nasty featured in the song Three MC's and One DJ.
Although they started out as a hardcore punk rock band we all know that that is not what they are famous for. They are famous for being pioneers of hip-hop! The first successful white hip hop group who enjoyed international critical acclaim and were responsible for taking hip hop into the mainstream.
So it was Friday night 15th June 2007 at Sonar, we were in the Gran Via exhibition centre in west part of Barcelona waiting for the Beastie Boys to come on. Thankfully we got there early! The arena was packed with what felt like thousands of European clubbers.
The Beastie Boys burst on and the place went wild, we realised we were surrounded by not just any old clubbers but mad head party animals about to lose it to old skool heavy metal hits!
We were as near the front as we dared, I'm only small and within two songs the crowd were throwing themselves around and into each other as the music gained pace and volume! They played loads of their hits including to my delight Ch-Check it out and Oh Word! Everyone was going mad and the scratchin solo was a definite highlight put together with the lights the atmosphere, not easily forgotten.
Lucky for me my friend had seen the Beastie Boys in their hay day, many moon ago, so I was able to ask him to compare. He said that they had blown him away nearly 20yrs later. What can you say but bow down to the masters.
