tabla beat science |
Classically trained tabla drummer and crossover pioneer Talvin Singh performed on early-90's Björk and Siouxsie & the Banshees albums before opening his East-meets-West electropunk club Anokha in London. Following his 1998 Mercury Prize-winning debut LP OK, Singh formed Tabla Beat Science to reconstitute traditional Hindustani rhythms for the jungle generation.
Recruiting famed tabla master Zakir Hussain (son of Ustad Allarakha Khan, Ravi Shankar's tabla player), vocalist and sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan, percussionist Trilok Gurtu and drummer Karsh Kale, Singh and company delivered their hypnotic debut Tala Matrix in 2000. Produced by bassist and avant-garde visionary Bill Laswell, the record promises to do for the tabla what War's Why Can't We Be Friends did for the cowbell. http://www.karshkale.com |
