Stereolab Guitarist Mary Hansen Killed

Longtime guitarist and vocalist Mary Hansen died Monday after being hit by a car in London while riding her bicycle, the band announced today. She was 36 years old.

A native of Australia, Hansen joined Stereolab back in 1992, originally serving as the group's keyboardist before switching to guitar upon the arrival of Katherine Gifford. She has also contributed vocals to albums by Brokeback, The High Llamas, Moonshake, and Mouse on Mars. She was a co-owner of the group's U.K. label Duophonic. The group's official statement, released on their web site, reads:

Mary 1/11/1966 - 9/12/2002
It is with great regret and deep sadness that I must announce the death of Mary.
We will all miss her dearly.
